GHS WRESTLING ALUMNI NEWS LETTER Vol. 2

January, 26, 2012 gw

Hello Mustangs!

First and foremost, I sincerely hope you and your families are doing well and are happy and healthy. There have been some exciting things happening in the world for the Mustang Wrestler Nation and I am chomping at the bit to share the news with you.

Just this past weekend GHS hosted the annual Mid Cal Championships which included such perennial powerhouses like Selma, Madera South, and Turlock respectively. With a score of 299.5 points the Mighty Mustangs were victorious and kept the team title in Garlic City!!!!  Selma finished second with 249 points.  Gilroy had 4 individual champions and many other place winners. The two featured matches of the night had Willy Fox wrestling a tough opponent from Reno High School, which Fox won 6-4, and Nikko Villereal (3rd in the State last year as a Freshman) vs. Alex Cisneros (3x State Champ) of Selma. Villereal and Cisneros met in the Clovis finals as well. Both times VIllereal gave Cisneros all he could handle, but lost 4-3 in double overtime, and in the Mid Cal finals 1-0. If you’re around this weekend, Jan. 27, head on out to Overfelt HS where you’ll find the Mustang grapplers in action at the Overfelt Classic.

Last week Coach Varela and GHS Principal, Dr. Marco Sanchez,  made a presentation and appeal to the school board to finally build a facility on campus that will house the wrestling programs and be available to the cheer/dance programs as well.  With well over 100 supporters in attendance, not only was there a case made by the wrestling program but also the GHS Parent Boosters teamed with the ASB President to put together a presentation about school wide facility issues.  With this round of $16million in bond measure money to split amongst the 4 oldest school sites in the district, everyone agreed that not only does GHS need an equitable face lift, but some serious health and safety issues must be immediately addressed.  During these presentations school board member Fred Tovar took issue with the facilities planning committee, and expressed sincere concerns that the current facility on campus designated to wrestling was unsafe for use. He also asked why maintenance or renovation of said facility was not higher on the priority list given its current unhealthy state.  The committee spokesperson could not provide a viable answer.  After this closing comment, “Wrestling has developed many State and National champions, and the cheer/dance programs have accomplished many great things as well…but that’s not what I am here to talk about. More importantly, the new facility will continue to produce college bound students that return to give back to the Gilroy community…OUR community!”, the room erupted with applause.  That bold and true statement led school board member Jaime Rosso to address the rest of the board members and the supporters in attendance in a serious and firm tone stating, “I think we are all on the same page here and are in agreement that a new facility needs to be higher on the priority list and something needs to be done to ensure our students health and safety.”  Like a scene from a movie the room filled with a huge round of applause.  According to Dr. Sanchez, a sit down meeting will be held on February 6th to begin discussions on building a new wrestling facility.

Lastly, the 2nd annual Alumni night will be held on February 1st at GHS during the annual “Match of the Century” throw down! Gilroy will be wrestling Hollister that night starting with the JV squad at 5:30pm.  Coach Varela and the current team, along with parent boosters and the Gilroy Hawks will be hosting a small reception before the dual meet. That gathering will happen in the foyer of the gym.  While there alumni can meet some of the current varsity wrestlers and coaching staff as well as catch up with each other.  Alumni in attendance will be honored and introduced to the crowd in between the JV and Varsity contests. If you plan on attending please email me at mattcorona1@yahoo.com or Coach Varela at gvworm@netzero.net.  I sincerely hope to see all of you there.

Update on Jesse Delgado

No. 5 Jesse Delgado pushed the pace early against No. 1 Zach Sanders with a takedown and two near-fall points. The freshman locked Sanders in a quick cradle and almost got the Gopher on his back, but the senior was able to slither out and only give up two back points. Delgado scored another takedown and three more near-fall points to go up 9-1 on Sanders, taking a 9-2 lead into the second period. Both wrestlers scored takedowns to push the score to 11-4 into the third with Sanders starting down in third. Sanders was too much for Delgado in the third, scoring 10 points in the last period to escape with the win, 14-13 to put the Gophers up 6-3. The Fighting Illini Next match is 01/22/2011. Good Luck Lil Man! From all the Lil Hawks.
