A donation from one family to another

Six years ago, Troy Garcia’s brother, Dino Garcia, a former Gilroy Hawk and Gilroy High wrestler who carried his passion for the sport far past his 1986 graduation, died of complications from diabetes at the age of 36.

For the past five years, Troy, who runs Heavy’s Grill on the Green located in the clubhouse at Gilroy Golf Course, his sisters Ruby Jeske, Gina Salgado and Michelle Adams, father Gil and mother Gloria, and plenty more family and friends have dedicated countless hours year-round to organize an annual golf tournament – The Dino Garcia Memorial – which takes place every Saturday after Father’s Day. Proceeds from the event have gone to various entities over the years.

But following the most recent tournament, and after a portion went toward Dino’s eldest daughter’s tuition at Chico State University, Troy got together with the family to discuss what to do with the rest of the money raised.

After attending a GHS dual meet – something Dino did dozens of times while alive – last season, Troy noticed a few problems.

“Last year, we started going to watch and we felt (they were) a team of champions and they don’t have anything – mat’s beat up, uniforms are beat up,” Troy said.

The family knew exactly where the extra money needed to go.

“We all decided that my brother would want money to go to the wrestling program,” Troy said. “So with a little help from Guy Trujillo, Ignacio Magana and Chris Martinez, they all donated money, as well as what we raised at the golf tournament, we decided to get some sweat suits for the kids.”

The perfect tribute to both Dino and the storied GHS program.

So Troy invited the 2011 team down to the grill – which is named in honor of Dino as “Heavy” was his nickname – Thursday night for what they were told was a special team dinner prior to a dual meet the next night at state-ranked Oakdale High School.

The meal happened to be just the start of their night.

Troy shared of his brother’s love of the wrestling program, how he was a member of the Gilroy Hawks and wrestled in the hometown Mid-Cals tournament.

“It takes a different beast to wrestle and he just loved it,” Troy recalled.

After gobbling up carefully doled out portions – cautiously watching their weight, of course – the wrestlers were treated to the early Christmas present. Out came shiny new blue sweat suits, emblazoned with the Gilroy Mustangs logo in yellow.

“Don’t be surprised if you see me wearing this at school when we get back from break,” senior Willie Fox chuckled as the team stared wide-eyed at their new digs.

But wait, there was more.

“With a little help from Hard Ninety, it turned into backpacks, beanies, polo shirts. You know, we just felt like these kids are champions and they should look like champions,” Troy said.

As junior Leif Dominguez pulled each item out of the backpack to display for the rest of the team, the kids showed their appreciation in unison.

“I can’t believe someone has done this for us,” GHS head coach Greg Varela said. “I’ve been coaching here for 10 years and no one has ever done anything like this. This is special. We’ve never once had gear like this. It has always been pieced together. We look like a team. It means a lot to us that someone is looking out for us and has a tie to the team. We really appreciate it.”

Roger Hernandez, owner of local clothing company, Hard Ninety, said he jumped at the opportunity to help Troy with the donation.

“He’s a family friend and we just put our heads together because we wanted to help out as much as we could,” Hernandez said.

Hernandez co-owns Hard Ninety with Steven Leungskil and Rick Hattaway, and Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero and other local athletes have worn their clothes.

After all the noise had settled and he shook hands with all the wrestlers, Troy sat back in his chair, angled his head slightly to the left, drew an extended breath, slowly exhaled and said, “did you see the smiles on their faces? My brother would’ve been proud.”

The nine-time Central Coast Section champions will debut their new gear at their first home meet of the season, Jan. 4 against Alvarez.

Jesse Delgado to University of Illinois

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – University of Illinois head coach Jim Heffernan announced the addition of 11 student-athletes to the Illini squad for the 2011-12 season on Thursday. The Orange and Blue add three transfers and eight freshmen, including redshirt-freshmen Jesse Delgado and Tucker Armstrong, who join the Illini after spending last season at Cal Poly. These student-athletes join previously announced Caleb Ervin to bring the group of Illini newcomers to 12.

Delgado went 21-1 in open tournaments in 2010-11, including a victory at the 2011 NWCA National Collegiate Open. He also won the FILA Junior Nationals Freestyle Championships at 55 kg/121 pounds on April 10, 2011. He won a California state title at 112 pounds in 2009 and finished fourth at 125 in 2010. He also took third in the state at 112 in 2008 and third at 103 in 2007. Delgado won the 2010 NHSCA Senior National title at 119 and was the NHSCA Sophomore National Champion at 112 in 2008. He was rated the No. 4 recruit nationally by Wrestling USA and No. 5 by both Amateur Wrestling News and WIN Magazine. He will wrestle at 125 for the Illini and will will be eligible immediately, with four years of eligibility remaining.

Local middle school wrestlers impress at section finals

GILROY – Family, friends and fans packed the gym at South Valley Middle School all in anticipation of the Santa Clara County East Sectional Regional Championships.
The event was scheduled to kick off at 3:30 but there was no sign of a start until 45 minutes after the fact.

A buzz began to rise from the bleachers, and the longer the start of the competition was delayed, the hum grew louder.

There was a noticeable build up of anxiousness. Then it happened.

As the first matches got under way, the place erupted. The cheering, the coaching, the yelling, things got serious in a hurry. Like organized chaos — it was quite a site.

“It is a very passionate sport,” said South Valley head coach Armando Garcia. “You don’t realize it unless you have been a part of it or around it all the time.”

Gilroy was strongly represented as Brownell, Solorsano and South Valley, combined, had 27 wrestlers in Tuesday’s meet, vying for spots in Thursday’s County finals, with South Valley sending a school record 14 kids into the Regionals, Garcia said.

In all, there were 17 schools and 19 weight-class titles up for grabs.

On the mat, the intensity levels increased with each passing round. Though they range in ages from 12 to14, the dreams of each of the boys and girls shined through in the emotions they expressed in both winning and losing.

There were tears in defeat, and smiles from ear to ear in victory. The passion was raw and powerful. The dedication and commitment demonstrated by kids at such a young age was evident.

Off to the left on mat three, a coach lowered his head and gave it a quick shake after his wrestler went down in defeat, but that frustration didn’t last but a few seconds as he consoled the teenager and calmly encouraged him, and gave him a few pointers for “next time.”

Visible through a big sigh of relief, blood colored the inside of an athletes’ mouth as she walked over to her coach after securing a spot in the finals.

“Did you bite your tongue?” he asked.

She just nodded, without a word, and went on her way.

Everything went according to plan for the three local middle schools, each with wrestlers advancing through the first round and beyond.

“As long as it’s someone from Gilroy is winning, then everything is good,” said Brownell coach Andres Barragan.

Fifteen of the 19 championship matches featured at least one of the Gilroy middle schools, and even more astounding, six of those pitted local wrestlers against each other.

“It shows the growth of our wrestling community,” Garcia said.

Nine South Valley wrestlers took home championships and 13 in all qualified for Thursday’s County meet.

“We came together this season and had a very mature team,” Garcia said. “I don’t focus too much on wins. I look for the kids to give their full effort. They did that and completed what they wanted.”

Brownell had two wrestlers win titles in their weight class who will wrestle in the County finals.Solorsano had one wrestler finish first, but will send five in total to County as the top two from each class get to move on.

Title locks up amazing career for female wrestler

Steven and Jamie Hernandez wanted their daughter to stay active. Just sitting around was never an option.

So in the sixth grade Jasmine Yanez went out for the South Valley Middle School wrestling team.

Seven years and more than 20 different wrestling titles among dozens of other top-10 finishes later, Yanez wrapped up her senior year on the Gilroy High wrestling team last month, staking claim to her second straight prep state title. And to top it off, college is on the horizon.

“Honestly, it’s been really crazy and insane. It’s had its ups and its downs. I never thought I would get this far,” Yanez said perched on a bar stool in her home last week, surrounded by old photos, colorful singlets and a pile of medals.

Yanez’s resume reads more like one submitted by a wrestler about to retire. It’s extensive and impressive – three time All-American, three-time USA state champ, two-time California high school state titlist and two-time Central Coast Section winner, just to name a few.

Yanez said her crowning achievement so far was a first place at the 2010 Body Bar Women’s National Championships – a world team qualifier.

“I had always placed at nationals but I had never been higher than fifth,” Yanez said. “To be up on the podium was the best feeling in the world.”

And to think, for the first year or two, the Hernandez’s weren’t 100-percent sure Yanez wanted to continue the sport.

Give it a go

“She hadn’t really done any sports before that,” Steven said. “We asked her at the beginning of every season if she wanted to keep going. It got tough sometimes; making weight, homework on top of that, up ’til midnight. I think that’s similar to a lot of athletes. But she kept doing it.

Jaime added, “If the answer was yes, she had to finish the season; finish what she started.”

Looking back, there wasn’t much doubt that Yanez would keep it up. All it took was a simple beat down of a teammate and friend to light the competitive fire.

“At first it was, ‘why am I here?’” Yanez recalled. “Two weeks in we had our first dual meet amongst ourselves, it was like a practice dual. I ended up hurting my opponent. I felt bad, but just being out there on the mat and feeling the adrenaline of actually competing it was fun. And that’s when I was like, ‘yeah, maybe I do actually like this.’”

Under the tutelage of a multitude of coaches at South Valley, including Armando Garcia, Bert Mar, Yanez held her own for the top middle school program in the county as she adjusted to the grueling schedule, which not only consisted of mat time but also school work.

Steven said she didn’t win very often in her first season, but that only fueled a work ethic that began to develop.

“It wasn’t natural ability, she worked hard, she worked the entire time,” he said. “This is a sport where you can’t make someone do it, you have to want to. It’s like going to work every day, some days you don’t want to go, but once you are there you do your best.”

After a rough go in the sixth grade, Yanez joined the Gilroy Hawks youth program, gaining much needed tournament and training experience under the watchful eye of coach Greg Varela, which proved valuable. Yanez wrestled on the “varsity” squad at South Valley her seventh and eighth grade years and immediately made the big squad at GHS.

“Throughout the years I’ve had my times where I’ve wanted to quit like any wrestler,” Yanez said. “Trying to get through the long nights of homework, and classes, then straight from school to practice and back for more homework and hardly getting any rest. It was a big burden at first. But I finally found my own groove and got through it.”

Though the number of female wrestlers has consistently multiplied over the past three years, all-girls matches were few and far between. It was just Yanez and the guys a lot of times.

“I never really worried about it,” Yanez said. “It’s just there’s my opponent, that’s who I’m going to wrestle.”

Still, the dynamic is interesting, Yanez said, some girls didn’t want to wrestle boys and vise versa. To Yanez, everyone was just a wrestler.

“She has done a good job of each match is its own regardless of whether its a male or female,” Steven said. “It doesn’t matter what sex they are. You can’t go into it mentally, ‘oh it’s a boy or oh, it’s a girl,’ you just wrestle. It doesn’t matter if they are No. 1 in the nation or a brand new wrestler, You go in there, do your best and see what happens at the end.”

But there was always a little extra in-your-face reaction if Yanez bested a boy.

“It was pure satisfaction when she would wrestle the boys,” Jamie said, leaning back slightly in her chair as if she began to think about all the matches she watched from the bleachers. “There were so many times when we’d get ready for the match and boys would be like ‘oh, I got this in the bag.’ I would tell her to take care of business. It was more exciting when she beat one of them.”

Yanez has seen the sport grow among female wrestlers and at this year’s inaugural CIF State Invitational hosted 336 female wrestlers.

“They were better than she was. There is a lot of established wrestlers out there,” Steven said. “Finally there has been a shift and there is a lot more.”

As her senior year comes to a close and a decision awaits for her next destination – narrowed down to College of San Mateo and Northern Michigan – Yanez has spent time reflecting on all the friendships she has made with Gilroy wrestlers along the way.

“We are all a little different, but we understand each other,” Yanez said. “I think it’s having to go through as much as we do, all the sacrifices and discipline. We are all a little out there and goofy.”

Yanez boasts a 4.2 grade point average and will be the first member in her family, on her mom’s side, that has scholarship opportunities.

“She has doors open that no one in my family has ever seen,” Jamie said.

SAN JOSE – If the phrase nine-peat didn’t exist before, it’s an Urban Dictionary phrase now – at least in Gilroy.

Like a broken record stuck replaying the same sound over and over, seven straight finals matches began with the public address announcer using the same phrase.

“From Gilroy” … his voice boomed through the gym packed with an energetic crowed at Independence High School in San Jose, the site of the 2010 -11 Central Coast Section wrestling championships on Saturday night.

However, this tone was music to Gilroy’s devoted fans’ ears. And louder still were the boisterous cheers raining down from the bleachers as each of the seven Mustangs (three juniors, one sophomore and three freshmen), took the mat one win shy of a CCS championship.

Four claimed the evening’s ultimate prize while three placed runner-up, capping another dominant run to the team title – the program’s ninth straight.

“This is a special group and we don’t take anything for granted GHS head coach Greg Varela said. “These kids train 12 months a year for two weeks of the season, CCS and state.”

Losing eight seniors a year ago, this was to be the year of the Gilroy collapse – at least that’s what others had hoped. Inside the wrestling room at GHS, though, Varela knew what he had; a youthful yet experienced batch of wrestlers determined to carry out what has become commonplace – winning.

“This was our rebuilding year but our freshman refused to comply with that,” Varela said. “They have been in this program five, six years coming to CCS and watching their wrestling big brothers win. This was their turn to make their mark and they showed what they were made of this week.”

There was no sign of a letdown whatsoever. Instead, GHS had basically secured the championship prior to Saturday night’s finals only to put an exclamation point on its dominating two-day tournament with four individual champions. The Mustangs ended up compiling 243 points, 73.5 more points than second-place Saint Francis.

“These kids are more than teammates, they are family,” Varela said. “It feels good to come in here and keep the streak that Armando (Gonzalez) created. I’m just taking a lot of the things I learned under Armando and put my own spin on it. He laid the foundation for me and the older kids laid the foundation for the younger kids and we are just trying to keep it going.”

Freshman Paul Fox defeated Daniel Polanco of Saint Francis 10-3 in the 112-pound final to get title-train moving.

The tournament’s No. 1-seeded 112-pounder remained in control of his match throughout, picking up eight of the 10 points via takedown.

Freshman Victor Olmos managed an improbable come-from-behind 5-4 triumph in the 119-pound match. Olmos trailed by two late in the third period. His opponent, Andre Delagnes of Menlo-Atherton, was called for fleeing the mat – one point awarded to Olmos – to make it 4-3 with 30 seconds left. Out of nowhere, Olmos cut down Delagnes with 10 ticks left and hung on for his life.

“I shot my double and took him down,” Olmos said as he racked his brain trying to describe the frantic final moments of the match.

“Those last 10 seconds felt like for ever. When the buzzer rang, I didn’t know what to do, I was excited. I didn’t expect to get into the finals of CCS until junior year. To win as a freshman, I’m pretty happy.”

Nikko Villarreal made it a freshman sweep in the 125-pound go-round, picking up takedown points at will against El Camino’s Brian Ha en route to a 20-7 win.

“I like the feeling,” Villarreal said with a smile.

Junior Blake Kastl walked with a daunting stride to the center of the mat for his 135-pound final with a chip on his shoulder. He looked angry and was.

Moments before his bout, he watched junior Willie Fox finish runner-up for the third straight year. And as Fox fell by second-period pin, the crowd unleashed a deafening roar when Riordan’s Zac Contreras had his arm raised in victory. Kastl took offense.

“I was mad. I thought Willie was going to do good but then the whole place just goes crazy for two minutes straight,” Kastl said. “It just makes me mad that everyone wants Gilroy to lose. Willie is the hardest working kid and he deserves to win.”

Kastl used his aggression and earned his second straight CCS crown, pinning Kamyar Sharifi out of Santa Clara in the second period.

Aaron Gonzalez (140) and Leif Dominguez (103) joined Fox (130) as second-place finishers.

“I’m not really that hard on myself,” Gonzalez said, noting that he feels blessed to be wrestling again after missing his entire sophomore season. “I still have a few tricks up my sleeve that I’m saving for state.”

Dominguez encountered his old workout partner Isaiah Locsin of Live Oak in the 103-pound final. Locsin, the state’s No. 3-ranked 103-pounder prevailed 8-2.

All seven Mustangs qualify for the CIF state meet in Bakersfield, which begin Friday.

“At this point they are dialed in. They wish it was tomorrow,” Varela said.

BAKERSFIELD – Three championship rounds and two consolation rotations through Day 1 at the CIF State Wrestling Championships and three Mustangs remain neck deep in the championship bracket while three others are still alive in the consolation bracket.

Championship Round 3 went off with out a hitch for the trio of Nikko Villarreal (125), Willie Fox (130) and Blake Kastl (135)Friday afternoon in Bakersfield. All three are 3-0 so far and will wrestle once more this evening for a spot in the semifinals.

Villarreal battled back from a 6-2 deficit against Blake Lowrie of Laguna turning the tide for a 9-8 decision.

Willie Fox drew Tanner Feurerstein of Oakdale in the third championship round, prevailing 9-4.

Kastl picked apart Jesse Taylor of Poway and cruised to an 11-1 major decision.

In the quarterfinals, Villarreal will take on Alex Cisneros of Selma, the state’s No. 1-ranked 125-pounder, Fox will meet Nick Pena – No. 2 in the state – of Selma and Kastl’s opponent is Dalton Metivier of Lincoln.

Meanwhile, down in the consolation portion, Leif Dominguez (103) rebounded from a second-round loss with a 5-0 win to keep his tournament alive. Paul Fox also atoned for an earlier defeat with an 8-2 decision against Justin Martin Del Camp of West.

Victor Olmos’ (119) day came to an end after a narrow 5-4 loss in the second consolation round. Aaron Gonzalez (140) also met the end of the road on Friday, going 0-2.

Two more consolation rounds and one more championship round will take place on Day 1 later tonight.
